Continuous improvement is the key to staying ahead whether it’s life or work. But how do successful tech teams consistently level up their game?
Enter the retrospective meeting – a powerful ritual that's transforming how teams work and innovate.
I call it ritual because it has to be in your team’s bi-weekly cadence similar to planning meeting and standup.
If you are Engineering Manager or Tech Lead, it is your responsibility to organize one for the team and encourage everyone to participate in that meeting.
What is Retrospective Meeting?
Retrospective meetings, often called "retros," are structured team discussions held at the end of a project, sprint, or work cycle. These sessions provide a dedicated space for team members to reflect on their recent work, celebrate successes, and identify areas for improvement.
Retros should not be too technical but it should cover below points with determined actions.
What went well?
What did not go well? why? and what can be done differently?
Any process change proposals
Improvements required to function well in the team
Action items if it requires to communicate to other teams
Kudos to particular team members for specific achievements
Bubble up some reverse feedback to management chain
Retrospective Cadence
In Agile Scrum, retrospectives typically occur at the end of each sprint, usually every 1-4 weeks. However, the frequency can vary:
Scrum teams: After each sprint (1-4 weeks)
Kanban teams: Monthly or quarterly
Project-based: At project milestones or completion
The key is consistency – regular retrospectives build a culture of continuous improvement.
