Preface
In February 2015, I was in my final quarter of my Master's degree in Los Angeles 🎓. I was struggling to secure a full-time job after graduation due to several pressures: repaying student loan debt 💸, limited time on my OPT status ⏳, convincing companies to sponsor my H1-B visa 🛂, and adapting to a different interview system than in India (my home country) 🇮🇳➡️🇺🇸.
After a great struggle, I received my first full-time job offer from SanDisk in Silicon Valley, with a salary I had never imagined possible 🤯💰. I was overjoyed and grateful, accepting the offer without negotiation (one of my biggest mistakes 😓) because I felt pressured by my student loan debt and immigration status.
Things I was unaware of and naive to think:
Companies often give low initial offers 📉
It's crucial to research the living expenses of the job location 🏙️💵
One should compare salaries of competitive companies in the same area 📊
It's possible to counter an offer without losing the original one 🤝
Many aspects of an offer can be negotiated, such as salary and job level 💼📈
Obtaining competing offers can strengthen your negotiating position 💪🏆
If you are like me (in 2015), this article is must read for you
In the competitive world of tech jobs, negotiation skills can significantly impact your career trajectory and overall job satisfaction.
Understanding the key components of negotiation is crucial for securing the best possible job offer.
This article explores the importance of negotiation and breaks down its essential elements in the tech industry.

Importance of Negotiation
Negotiation is a critical skill in the tech industry, where talent is in high demand. According to a 2023 survey by Hired, 90% of tech professionals who negotiated their job offers received higher salaries.
Effective negotiation can lead to better compensation, improved work-life balance, and career growth opportunities.
Components of Negotiation
Based on my experience with multiple companies, I have jot down some most important components which should be in your list while talking with recruiter to negotiate your offer.
Job Level: Your job level directly influences your responsibilities, career progression, and compensation. Ensure the offered position aligns with your experience and career goals.
Most of the big corporate companies down level you as a new joiner even though you have many years of experience. Sad that companies don’t recognize your outside experience for their organization’s similar level.
Base Pay: Base salary is often the primary focus of negotiations.
In 2023, the median base salary for software engineers in the USA was $120,000, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This number can be different location to location as per their living standards, expense and many other factors. Please do your research for the job you are considering.
Stocks/Options: Equity compensation is common in tech companies whether it’s RSU (Restricted Stocks Unit) in public companies and options and equities in startups.
Understanding the potential value and vesting schedule of stock options is crucial for long-term financial planning. Usually companies provide this information in offer letter and other benefit portals before accepting.
Sign-on Bonus: One-time signing bonuses can range from a few thousand dollars to over $50,000 for senior positions in top tech firms.
These bonuses can offset relocation costs or compensate for unvested equity from a previous employer which you are going to loose by living the company.
Yearly Bonus: Performance-based annual bonuses are standard in many tech companies.
Discuss the bonus structure, performance metrics, and potential payout ranges during negotiations.
Usually companies have multipliers of your performance x company’s own performance to calculate your yearly bonus.
One thing which you can negotiate is percentage (%) of bonus of your earned salary in a particular fiscal year. For ex. 20% of salary
Relocation Package: When you are required to move to a specific location to join a company, most companies provide you some kind of relocation package
Relocation package usually provided in some fixed lump sum amount which is usually non taxable OR you get a full help from some 3rd party mobility company to make your move smooth and hassle free.
Pre-Joining Considerations
Several pre-joining conditions are equally important to negotiate:
Immigration Sponsorship: For international candidates, visa sponsorship is crucial. Discuss the company's willingness to sponsor work visas and support green card applications if applicable.
Joining Date Agreement: Flexibility in start dates can be beneficial, especially if you need to complete projects with your current employer or relocate.
Existing Planned Vacations: Negotiate approval for any pre-planned vacations or time off, ensuring they won't affect your standing with the new employer.
Remote Work/hybrid Options: With the rise of hybrid work models, discuss remote work possibilities and frequency of in-office requirements.
Professional Development: Negotiate opportunities for continuous learning, such as conference attendance, training programs, or education reimbursement.
Health and Wellness Benefits: Consider negotiating comprehensive health insurance, mental health support, and wellness programs.
Conclusion
Effective negotiation in software engineering and tech jobs involves understanding and leveraging various components beyond just salary. By considering all aspects of an offer, including pre-joining conditions, you can secure a package that aligns with your professional and personal goals.
Remember, negotiation is an expected part of the hiring process in the tech industry, so don't hesitate to advocate for your worth and needs.
